395,030 acres (down 4,790-acres)
Robert Earl Holding (1926–2003) purchased SINCLAIR OIL CORP. for $78 million in 1976. The following year, he and wife, Carol, bought Idaho’s SUN VALLEY resort for $12 million. More recently, the Holdings spent $100 million on SNOWBASIN in Utah with the goal of transforming the resort into a world-class ski destination. The family’s land in Montana includes the 190,000-acre SUNLIGHT RANCH near Yellowstone. Today, his widow and their three children own Sinclair Oil, with two refineries in Wyoming and more than 1,400 Sinclair service stations in 28 states.
