1,236,000 ACRES (up 311,000 acres)
Privately held Subway, which was founded by Peter Buck and Fred DeLuca in the 1960s, is the largest single-brand restaurant chain on earth with more than 41,000 locations in 100-plus countries. Thanks to the success of Subway, Buck has been able to anchor his portfolio with significant timberland holdings in Maine, primarily through his TALL TIMBERS TRUST. In 2019, he increased his acreage by more than one-third when he acquired 311,000 additional acres of Maine timberland from No. 92, Alabama’s McDonald family.
