Known as the Merchant Prince of Salem, David Pingree (1795–1863) purchased his first tract of Maine timberland in 1841. Although he eventually established landholdings in Kentucky, Ohio, New Hampshire, Texas, and Wisconsin, his Maine properties became the basis for the family’s current portfolio, which is managed via Bangor-based SEVEN ISLANDS LAND COMPANY. Companies affiliated with Seven Islands provide state-of-the-art sustainable forest management services, mill forest products into lumber and flooring, and can chip as much as 400,000 tons of roundwood per year.
