Hmong Farmers Purchase 155 Acres in Minnesota

Sixteen families, represented by the Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA), purchased 155 acres of land in Southeastern Minnesota. After settling in the region as political refugees following the Vietnam War, the Hmong began renting farmland in Vermillion Township and became a vital part of the state’s local food economy. Through state-funded grants and fundraising efforts, the HAFA purchased the parcel where 100 Hmong farmers already grow a variety of crops. Produce from the farm goes to farmers’ markets and community supported agriculture. The acquisition will enable farmers who rent land from the association to pay less than they might on the open market.
